Top 5 active NFL Coaches: Mike Tomlin

Here is a no-holds-barred version of the Top 5 active NFL coaches. With the absence of Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, and Tony Dungy this year, we needed to update the Top 5 Active NFL Coaches.

5. Mike Tomlin Pittsburgh Steelers

Buffalo Bills v Pittsburgh Steelers
The nineteenth coach in Steeler's history and most recently the youngest head coach to lead a team to the Superbowl Mike Tomlin has proven he has what it takes to be a great head coach. I know that Dick Lebeau had about as much to do with winning this title as Tomlin, but when you're the guy who's replacing the legend Bill Cowher you deserve a lot of credit.

As a defensive backs coach for the Bucs (2001-2005) The Bucs led the NFL in total defense in 2002 and 2005. As defensive coordinator for the Vikings in 2006 his defense ranked 8th overall and first against the run (Last against the pass but that's neither here nor there).

Tomlin overcame the pressures of coaching a storied franchise by winning the Superbowl in his second year in the throne. Hired by the "Rooney Rule" or not, Mike Tomlin is surrounded by an excellent coaching staff and is here to stay.

Jon Lester is unbeatable; Tampa Bay series preview.

The Red Sox big right hander Jon Lester cannot lose. He's been pitching out of his mind of late. Jon Lester hasn't given up more than 4 ERs since May 26th. With an offense like the Red Sox have knowing you only have to score five runs to win a game is a great feeling.

Lester takes the mound for the first game in the Tampa Bay series and I know since I decided to write this article on Lester that he will undoubtedly give up eight runs over three and third.

Tonight's matchup: LHP JON LESTER BOS vs. RHP ANDY SONNANSTINE

The Red Sox and the Rays appear to be headed in totally different directions. The Rays have decided to send their ace to the Angels for basically nothing, and they're going to try to win the wild card with the likes of prospect Wade Davis, Sonnanstine, Price, Garza, Niemann, and Shields. Other than tomorrow nights Garza vs. Beckett matchup I'm not too worried about Tampa. They're going to be playing some very tough teams down the stretch and the Red Sox are starting to click at the perfect time.

Look for tonights game to be a close game with Jon Lester throwing in another quality start. I expect Lester's line to be something like 7 IP 5 H 3ER 8K's 3BB

J.D. Drew should play a big role in deciding tonight's matchup. A win will put Boston well on their way to securing the Wild Card.

NL West doing a last minute shuffle Thome to Dodgers and A letter to Brad Penny

Thome and Garland head to the Dodgers.

Chicago White Sox at Baltimore Orioles

Thome is no longer a force in the American League. He had 23 HRS and 73 RBI's and an average below .250. This is what you should expect from Thome though, I wouldn't really say he's LOST all that much. He's not Albert Pujols, but he also hasn't been in the National League.

I think we're going to see a revitalized Thome joining the Dodgers with a legit World Series opportunity. I wouldn't be surprise to see Thome bomb 7 HR's in September and Early October. Look for Thome to be a large contributor to the Dodgers offense the next few months (if he gets the playing time).

Brad Penny signs with the San Francisco Giants

A letter to Brad Penny

I couldn't be more happy for an ex Red Sox player than I am for you, Brad. You're a solid starter on any team, now that you're in the National League I'll be looking for you to dominate the NL West. I'm really looking forward to seeing you pitch. Brad you have great stuff, you pretty much always have. I think you've learned a lot pitching in the American League for a few months. I expect you to be a key contributor to the already stacked SF Giants pitching staff.

By the way how good did it feel to see Junichi Tazawa get lit up the other day? Not "soo good, soo good, sooo good" on this end. I wish him the best wherever he is right now. I want to forwarn you that if we meet in October, I won't be cheering for you, but this doesn't mean we're not friends anymore... Remember.. this is a business.

Congrats Penny, I'm rooting for you in the NL this October.

P.S Thanks for not going to the Yankees. Good luck against the Dodgers.

Sincerely,

Diesel
